Hunting

October 25, 2015 - Moose border 2

Nestled on the edge of a lake, our hunting lodge is accessible by vehicle via a logging road a two hour drive from Corner Brook, the main hub of our area. We are situated on the shore of South West Lake which stretches five miles, buffered by large stands of forested land. Above the trees are barren plateaus which are excellent Caribou hunting terrain. The area consists of a series of small ponds and open marshland as well which is ideal moose hunting habitat. The vast area of ageless, prime pristine wilderness is ideal black bear habitat. Often we will use our satellite hunting camp which is a comfortable three miles from the main hunting lodge. Our enthusiastic guides and all our staff will work with you to ensure you have a memorable experience. Bow hunters and rifle hunters alike enjoy the challenges and rewards hunting with NewFound Outfitting brings. Many of our clients who hunt with us regularly relay this.

MOOSE

Newfoundland is an island that boasts the highest densities of moose in the entire world! The largest member of the deer family, much larger than elk, the Eastern Canadian moose is by far the most popular big-game animal in Newfoundland. Newfoundland moose hunting started after the moose were introduced to the province at the turn of the twentieth century and provincial moose population now exceeds 125,000 strong. This large ungulate stands taller than a large saddle horse and often weighs in excess of 1500 pounds.

Fortunately for moose hunters, the hunting season in Newfoundland coincides with the moose mating season or rut which runs from late September to early November. It is during this special time that our guides are often able to call a big bull moose to within easy rifle or archery range. The sight and sound of a big paddle horn bull moose coming through the brush looking for love is something that a hunter will never forget.

A fairly aggressive hunter should see approximately 25 moose during a normal week of hunting. For the average hunter, 30% to 40% of animals taken are classified as Newfoundland trophy bull moose. This percentage can rise if the hunter is willing to work a little harder in the field.

CARIBOU

Healthy woodland caribou forage the forest and roam the plateaus of our area at South West Lake. Newfoundland is the only place in the world to pursue this magnificent animal. The woodland caribou differs from the “Barrens Caribou”. Our caribou boast exquisite antlers of slightly less mass, but more points, which makes for a beautiful trophy mount.

Newfoundland woodland caribou hunting is done in terrain that consists of wooded slopes and rolling hills with valleys that may have long sections of tundra. Using primarily spot and stalk techniques, while caribou hunting in Newfoundland, hunters are able to size up the animal prior to stalking to within rifle or archery range. Weighing in at up to 500 pounds and adorned with dark crowned antlers, the Newfoundland woodland caribou is a sight to behold. Many trophy class woodland caribou are harvested each year in Newfoundland. The Woodland Caribou mating season or rut begins during the later part of September and continues into mid to late October. The rut normally runs for a three to a four week period.

Outdoorsmen should see approximately 20 Newfoundland Woodland caribou during a normal week of hunting. For the average person Caribou hunting, 30% to 40% of animals taken will be classified as trophies.

Our black bear hunting trips place you in the woods with some of the world’s largest black bears, often weighing in at over 500lbs! A combination of genetics, range, very low hunting pressure and an abundance of food contribute to making the Newfoundland black bear hunting trips a trophy opportunity like no other.

Many Black Bear Hunting Trips are done in the spring prior to the time in which they begin to rub the fur off their hides. Success rates are usually higher now as they are in a feeding frenzy after leaving their hibernation den. While hunting black bear in Newfoundland, hunter’s harvest bears 30 to 50 percent larger than the bears in other parts of Canada and Alaska. The province of Newfoundland has both a spring black bear hunting season and fall black bear hunting season and baiting is allowed during each. There are also ‘spot and stalk’ hunts available each season and with the large population, Newfoundland black bear hunting trips are some of the finest found.

Without a doubt, NewFound Outfitting offers black bear hunting at its best. Not only do the bears grow larger here, but the overall experience is second to none.
